Clayton County Public Schools have been fully accredited by Cognia since 2012 (after losing SACS accreditation in 2008), with a 2025 graduation rate of 86.3%, exceeding the Georgia state average of 84%. The district serves ~50,800 students across 67 schools and recently raised Content Mastery by 8-11 points across elementary, middle, and high since 2022. Riverdale parents have zoned schools, magnet options, and one #5-in-Georgia application school all within reach.

Are Clayton County schools accredited?

Yes. Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS) is fully accredited by Cognia (the modern successor to AdvancED and SACS). The district restored full accreditation in 2012 and has maintained it since. Accreditation is verified in the district's official accreditation report (retrieved 2026-05-14). Students at every CCPS school are eligible for Georgia's HOPE Scholarship and all postsecondary opportunities available to fully accredited GA districts.

This is the question every out-of-state parent asks me first. The answer is yes. The longer history is below.

How CCPS got here: 2008 to 2026

In August 2008, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) revoked Clayton County's accreditation. It was one of only three U.S. districts ever to lose full accreditation. The cause was governance failure: a dysfunctional school board, failure to meet state standards, and documentation gaps. For a brief window, CCPS graduates lost HOPE Scholarship eligibility, which damaged the district's reputation across metro Atlanta in ways that still echo in 2026.

Provisional accreditation was restored in 2009. Full accreditation was reinstated in 2012. The district has held full accreditation continuously since.

The reputation lag is real. A buyer in Charlotte or Birmingham Googles "Clayton County schools" and the first three results are still 2008 headlines or aggregator articles that haven't been updated. The current reality is different. CCPS posted a 86.3% graduation rate for the class of 2025, up from 83.1% the prior year and above the Georgia state average of 84% (CCPS news release on 2025 grad rate, retrieved 2026-05-14). Content Mastery scores per the Georgia Governor's Office of Student Achievement (retrieved 2026-05-14) show three consecutive years of growth: +10.9 points elementary, +8.9 points middle, +8.9 points high since 2022.

The district is on a trajectory. The 2008 headlines aren't the story anymore.

Elementary schools serving 30274 and 30296

CCPS does not publish ZIP-code-level zone tables. Schools below are physically located in or assigned to Riverdale ZIPs, but every buyer must verify the exact zone by address at the CCPS School and Bus Route Locator. Streets within the same ZIP can zone to different schools.

Church Street Elementary (4/10) is the highest-rated traditional zoned elementary in either ZIP. Pointe South Elementary has the lowest rating but feeds into Pointe South Middle, which carries the highest GreatSchools rating of Riverdale's zoned middle schools. Some parents accept a lower-rated elementary because the middle and high school zoned to that address carry higher ratings.

Pointe South Middle (5/10) is the highest-rated zoned middle school for Riverdale. It runs the Project Lead The Way curriculum (PLTW), a national pre-engineering pathway, and offers gifted education programming through the district's TAG (Talented and Gifted) referral process (CCPS Gifted Education, retrieved 2026-05-14).

Auto-referral to gifted services happens when a student scores "Distinguished Learner" on Georgia Milestones and reaches a high Lexile threshold. Parents can also self-refer. If you're moving to Riverdale and your kid is gifted-identified at their current district, send transcripts to the receiving CCPS school within the first week of enrollment so the gifted designation transfers cleanly.

Charles R. Drew High School (30296 zoned) is an AP Honor School with the highest AP participation rate (30%) of the four zoned high schools. The school operates an academy structure with small learning communities and a Medical Sciences magnet pathway that prepares students for pre-nursing, pre-pharmacy, and clinical-track college programs (Drew HS site, retrieved 2026-05-14). Verify whether a specific address zones to Drew at the CCPS locator before you count on it.

Riverdale High School (30274 zoned) runs 18 sports, with football and band as flagship programs that are central to school identity, alongside a large fine arts department. AP courses are available alongside dual enrollment with local colleges.

Mundy's Mill High has the highest reported graduation rate (89%) and the best GreatSchools score (4/10) of the four. If your address zones there, it's worth verifying at the locator before you write an offer.

Elite Scholars Academy (and other School Choice options)

CCPS operates 5 school-wide magnets, 12 magnet programs, 1 state-certified STEM school, and 2 IB Candidate schools. Six schools hold National Magnet School Certification from Magnet Schools of America. The district received a $14M+ federal magnet grant in October 2022 funding expansion through 2027 (CCPS magnet programs, retrieved 2026-05-14).

The flagship option:

Elite Scholars Academy (ESA) in Jonesboro is a Cambridge International + Early College magnet serving grades 6-12. ESA was named a 2025 National Magnet School of Excellence and is ranked #5 in Georgia and #18 in the U.S. News state ranking (ESA site, retrieved 2026-05-14). Students earn both a high school diploma and significant college credit through partnerships with Clayton State University. Open to any CCPS-zoned resident via the School Choice application process.

Other magnet programs accessible to 30274/30296 residents:

  • M.E. Stilwell School of the Arts (Forest Park). Full-school Visual and Performing Arts magnet. Nationally certified. Ranked #28 in Georgia.
  • Mundy's Mill Middle STEM. State-certified STEM.
  • Charles R. Drew Medical Sciences magnet. Within the zoned 30296 high school.
  • Aeronautical Sciences pathways. Hartsfield-Jackson proximity drives this.
  • Engineering, Film & Media, Political Leadership, Pharmacy pathways at various magnet high schools.
  • Dual Language Immersion (Spanish) at 4 elementary schools + 1 middle school.

Application process: open application window typically runs late fall through January for the following academic year. Apply through the School Choice portal. Lottery-based for some programs, application-and-test-based for ESA. Transportation is sometimes not provided to magnet sites, so verify program-by-program before applying.

How to verify the school zone for any address

Three-minute walkthrough that saves you from the wrong house:

  1. Open clayton.k12.ga.us/departments/transportation/school-and-bus-route-locator.
  2. Enter the exact street address with the correct ZIP. Don't paraphrase. The locator is strict about address formatting.
  3. The tool returns the zoned elementary, middle, and high school plus the morning and afternoon bus stop, bus number, and pickup/dropoff times.

Two streets in the same subdivision can zone to different elementary schools. A friend's house on the next block does not necessarily share your zone. Check every address you're seriously considering, on the day you write the offer.

The Edulog Parent Portal app provides real-time bus tracking once your student is enrolled. Transportation department phone: (770) 473-2835.

Active redistricting study, what to watch

CCPS is actively studying countywide redistricting to address southern panhandle growth, particularly in the Hampton area. The district owns a 100-acre tract earmarked for future development. As of May 2026, no current 30274 or 30296 school closures or zone changes have been announced for Riverdale, but homes in southern Clayton may see zone changes within the next 2-3 years (AJC redistricting coverage, retrieved 2026-05-14).

Board elections matter here too. 4 of 9 CCPS Board seats are up for election November 3, 2026 (primary May 19, 2026) per Ballotpedia (retrieved 2026-05-14). Board composition shifts can change redistricting priorities. If you're buying in a part of Riverdale that's far from a school, ask about feeder pattern stability before you commit.

Private school options

In-city Riverdale K-12 private options are limited. Niche lists 21 private schools, but most are early-childhood programs. The closest full K-12 Christian/Catholic options are in adjacent counties.

Tuition ranges sourced from Niche private school directory for Riverdale (retrieved 2026-05-14). Confirm current rates directly with each school. Georgia average private school tuition is $14,192.

Practical note: the closest full-K-12 Catholic option (St. Mary's) is in Fayetteville, ~25 minutes from Riverdale. Factor that drive into your morning routine before committing.

When to plan your move around the school calendar

The 2026-2027 CCPS calendar runs August 3, 2026 (first day) through May 26, 2027 (last day). Full calendar at the CCPS 2026-2027 calendar PDF (retrieved 2026-05-14).

The cleanest move window: June through July. Closing in early July, moving the week of July 15, registering at the new school the week of July 27, first day August 3. That's the ideal.

Mid-school-year moves (October through April) require:

  • Verified immunization records (Georgia state requirements)
  • Transcript transfer from the prior district
  • Registration through Registration Central
  • Mid-quarter grading transfer (which can complicate report cards)

If your closing is forced into a mid-year window, plan registration the same week you close so your student doesn't miss days waiting for paperwork.

If you've identified a target school and want to look at houses zoned to that address, schedule a call. I'll pull the inventory in that zone and walk you through which streets fit your budget and feeder pattern. You can also start with the Riverdale neighborhoods guide or the 30274 vs 30296 guide.

About this article. I wrote this because the most common reason buyers tell me they're hesitant about Riverdale is the school district. The 2008 accreditation loss is the elephant in the room, and the current data is dramatically different. Out-of-state buyers deserve the real story, not the 2008 headlines. About Johnnie.
